One common question we get is: are all electric car chargers the same, or do you need different chargers for different brands? The short answer is yes, almost every EV can be charged using the same Level 1 and Level 2 home chargers. You won’t have to buy another charger if you switch to a different EV. The one exception is the Tesla Supercharger network, which only works with Tesla vehicles. There are three levels of electric car charging available to St. Charles drivers, which vary based on their power and charging speed. Here’s everything you need to know:
Level 1 chargers plug into the same 120-volt three-prong outlets that power everything from your phone to your microwave. Since cars are quite a bit bigger than phones, Level 1 is the slowest form of charging, usually generating around 3 to 5 miles per hour. It’s convenient if you’re in a pinch and need a few miles, but in general, Level 1 is not recommended for frequent driving.
Level 2 charging is the most common type that’s used by EV drivers. Level 2 chargers have to be professionally installed by an electrician, but they offer much faster charging speeds – anywhere from 12 to 80 miles per hour. You can also find Level 2 chargers in public if you’re out and about and need to charge your battery.
Level 3 chargers are only found in public charging stations, since they’re usually too powerful to be installed on home electric grids. They use direct current (DC) fast charging, which can generate anywhere from 3 to 20 miles per minute! Level 3 chargers are great if you need a quick top-off in public, and they’re becoming more and more present thanks to networks like PlugShare and Electrify America.
