Average Hybrid Battery Lifespan

While there’s no single answer to how long hybrid batteries last, experts generally agree that you can expect around 100,000 miles from the average battery. That’s about ten years of daily drive time. Hybrid manufacturers in the United States are legally required to provide a warranty on high-voltage battery packs that cover up to 100,000 miles or eight years of drive time, which transfer to the new owner of a hybrid if the vehicle is sold. If you put extra strain on your battery by driving your vehicle more frequently or leaving your lights on overnight, you may get less mileage out of your battery, so be sure to use it mindfully!

Causes of Hybrid Car Battery Life Reduction

While hybrid car batteries are expected to have long lifespans thanks to their robust construction, there are a few reasons why a battery may not last as long as it’s supposed to. These include:

  • Poor electrical connections between cells or battery modules
  • Auto manufacturing defects in battery cells
  • Extreme high or low battery temperatures
  • Manufacturing differences between cells
  • Mechanical damage to the battery during routine maintenance or service
  • Improper serving procedures from an unqualified service center

If a Hybrid Battery Dies, Can You Still Drive the Car?

Finally, let’s address the question of whether you can continue to drive your hybrid with a dead battery. The answer depends on which battery is having trouble. Most hybrid cars come with two batteries: a large battery that powers the electric motor and a small battery that operates the electronics in your vehicle, such as the headlights and infotainment system. If the small battery dies, you can still operate your vehicle normally, albeit without some electronic components. However, if the large battery dies, you won’t be able to use the electric motor. Make a service appointment right away, so we can get it fixed!
