How to Clean an Air Filter

How can you keep your air filter cleaner during all those St. Louis and St. Charles travels? Proper maintenance will ensure that you enjoy cleaner air as you navigate the open roads. Your cabin air filter collects dust and debris so that it doesn’t circulate throughout the cabin. But over time, it needs a little TLC to maintain its performance. Find out how to keep your air filter cleaner, and learn other service tips from our experts at Suntrup Automotive Group!

Air Filter Cleaning: Step-by-Step Guide

While you can always count on the technicians at our service center, it’s not difficult to clean out your air filter on your own. In fact, you can usually take care of this task in just a few minutes. Here are the steps you’ll need to follow:

  • Access the Air Filter: Most air filters are enclosed in a housing for protection, so you might need a screwdriver or a wrench to access your filter. Check your owner’s manual if you’re not sure where to look.
  • Remove Loose Dirt, Dust, Etc.: Once you remove the filter, take it to the trash can and tap off the loose debris.
  • Vacuum the Filter: Next, grab a handheld vacuum cleaner to remove the additional finer particles from the air filter.
  • Apply Air Filter Cleaner: You can purchase an air filter cleaner at our parts department or make your own cleaning solution in a 2:1 ratio of water to mild laundry detergent. Shake your solution and spray it on the filter. Let it soak in for a minute or so.
  • Scrub with a Brush: Scrub the filter gently with a soft brush. If you can’t get into the crevices, grab an old toothbrush to get into the smaller surfaces.
  • Rinse Thoroughly & Dry: Rinse the air filter, and give it a good shake. Hang upside down to drip-dry. Avoid using heat to speed up the drying process.
  • Reassemble the Filter: Put the filter back, and close up the housing.

Does the Cabin Air Filter Affect AC & Air Quality?

Does your cabin air filter affect AC? Yes! Your cabin air filter collects everything from small dust to leaf debris and even bugs. Over time, a clogged filter can prevent your air conditioner from circulating cool air around the cabin. This can cause problems for the entire air circulation system and also your ability to drive comfortably! But luckily, routine maintenance is simple and effective. Keep up with your routine, and you won’t have a problem.
